This is one of the memorials set at regular intervals into the wall of the Thames Embankment. Sir Joseph Bazalgette (1819-91), served as Chief Engineer on London's new Metropolitan Board of Works from 1855, and designed and built London's sewerage system. In the 1850's all London's sewage ran down into the Thames. As Chief Engineer, Bazalgette offered a solution: build up the riverside embankment with main sewers underneath, then divert everything into them to be carried out to the estuary. In the process, there was land gain, the Victoria Embankment reclaimed 37 acres of foreshore.
