Roo's Sandy Pit, Ashdown Forest
Roo's Sandy Pit in the Winnie the Pooh stories was close to the Enchanted Place. It is also close to the nearby memorial to A A Milne and E H Shepard. Roo's Sandy Pit is an old quarry which is not very sandy now. In the story Roo played happily in the pit, but it was where Pooh, Piglet and Owl conspired to Kidnap Roo and force the newcomers Kanga and Roo to leave the Forest. It of course ended happily except for Piglet who had to take a bath and he had never "really been fond of taking those".

Ashdown Forest is a former medieval hunting forest, and is the highest ridge of the High Weald. At ten square miles it is the largest open access area in the South East. Ashdown Forest was purchased by East Sussex County Council from the De La Warr family in 1988. It is now managed by a Board of Conservators. Nearly two thirds of it is heathland and this looks its best in August and September.
