Hillmorton Middle Locks in Warwickshire
Locks No 5 and No 4.
There are three pairs of locks in the Hillmorton flight, providing a rise of 18ft 7in (about 5·7 metres).

When the Oxford Canal (1769-1790) was built by Brindley and Simcock the route was very long and winding to hug the terrain contours as much as possible. Single locks were built. When Brunel surveyed (and Cubitt built) the straighter and shorter route (1829-1834) the additional locks were built at Hillmorton to handle the extra traffic.

The locks are individually numbered (from the bottom) 2,3,4,5,6,7.

So "where is No 1?" I hear you cry!
The stop lock at Hawkesbury about sixteen miles away is considered to be Lock No 1.
