NT2660 : Rosslynlee Hospital
taken 6 years ago, near to Auchendinny, Midlothian, Scotland
I first visited this site in November 2010, when I wrote the following:- Part of the extensive hospital at Rosslynlee now available for sale and development. It is suggested that the C-listed buildings could be converted to form 60 flats, the 27 existing houses on the site could be renovated, and the former farm building converted into three units. The land also has potential for 28 new-build plots, thus providing a total of 118 units. Built in 1874 it was the Midlothian and Peebles Asylum until 1948, and then Rosslynlee Mental Hospital (1948 - 1960), and used originally for geriatric and adult psychiatric patients. It was due to close in 2011, but it now appears unnoccupied except for contractors and security.
I revisited in April 2018, expecting to see a housing estate but, apart from some deterioration and demolition, there has been little change. Planning applications are still being considered, but some indications of what might be built can be seen in Link . Interestingly, although the information found earlier that the hospital was built in 1874, and was one of the last big Victorian institutions of its type to be built, the buildings do not appear on Google Earth imagery of 1945.
