The building facing was at one time another of Wylam's several public houses, The Bird Inn. The property is joined to the Ship Inn which is still in business NZ1164 : The Ship Inn, Main Street, Wylam. A building plan illustrates the propsed re-building of 'The Bird Inn' at Wylam for Newcastle Breweries Ltd in 1897 and was approved by Hexham Rural District Council on the 8th June 1897 Link

Wylam's Inns
Although there were few shops in Wylam in 1891, the census that year reveals there was no shortage of Inns. Four of the six Innkeepers, were also doing other jobs. At the Stephenson's Arms, Michael Lynch was described as a 'beerhousekeeper and general dealer', at the Fox and Hounds, Robert Johnson was also a miner, John Phillips at the Bird Inn was a grocer, and at the Ship Inn, Edward Hawkins also worked as a bootmaker as well as the Innkeeper.
