Barclays branch in Market Square viewed on May 3rd 2018. The Pembrokeshire Herald reported that this branch, the last bank in Fishguard, will close its doors on May 18th 2018 for the final time. The Barclays branch in St Davids will also close on May 24th 2018. The bank blamed the use of the Internet, banking apps and the general fall in the numbers of customers using its branches, but politicians and community leaders have been concerned that the closures did not take into consideration the needs of businesses and the elderly.

The bank traces its origins back to 1690 when John Freame and Thomas Gould started trading as goldsmith bankers in Lombard Street, London. The name "Barclays" became associated with the business in 1736, when James Barclay, son-in-law of John Freame, one of the founders, became a partner in the business.
