Coastal East Lothian : Herding Fish Through A Hoop
Coastal East Lothian : Herding Fish Through A Hoop
A popular traditional pastime in the Belhaven district of East Lothian.

Of course, in the olden days, the hoops would have been made of whalebone not concrete. However during World War 2 all whalebone was requisitioned by the Government "in the national interest and to support the war effort". This concrete hoop probably dates from 1940/41.

Traditionalists have long decried and bemoaned the use of concrete hoops, claiming that concrete, being an un-natural and unfamiliar material, does not give the fish a sporting chance. Furthermore, critics claim, a freaked-out fish is notoriously difficult to herd.
