Berrington Hall
The Berrington estate had been in the hands of the Cornewall family since 1386, but was sold in 1775 to Thomas Harley, a wealthy banker and government contractor, who in 1767 was Lord Mayor of London. It was he who built the present house in 1781, making it available to his daughter and her new husband George Rodney, son of Admiral Rodney.
After the death of Thomas Harley, the house descended in the Rodney family until 1901 when it was bought by a Manchester businessman and Member of Parliament Baron Cawley. But in 1957 the estate was passed to the National Trust by his descendants.
