"Escape to light"
"Escape to light"
Sculpture by Josefina de Vasconcellos (1904-2005) to honour the heroic lives lost in sea rescues in the British Isles. The sculpture portrays a number of grotesque figures. The lifeboat house can be seen in the background.

The accompanying plaque states "The dragon is a well known logo for evil, and here is Man flying from the monster he has encouraged by giving in to its temptations of greed and power. Nature is seen flying from pollution and extermination."

"Sea may drown the body, but evil destroys the soul
With single minded Effort - Will - and Faith
Like the first man, we stand
barefooted on Time's sand
Courage and wit will keep the body,
but where's the power that can arm a soul
against the dragon who would eat it whole?
With single minded faith of Soul and Sight
Cast out the evil and Escape to Light."
