Former shoe factory in Mountergate
Former shoe factory in Mountergate
This Grade 2 listed building dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, which seems to have recently been redeveloped as a terrace of houses, is adjacent to St Faith's House > LinkExternal link and once belonged to EA Doe & Sons, a shoe manufacturer and in the mid to late 1800s it housed the boot and shoe factory of John Hotblack & Sons. The adjacent St Faith's House was their family home. See also > LinkExternal link. In the mid-20th century Norwich had about 30 boot and shoe manufacturers, together with related trades, which employed more than 10,000 people. Today, the only major shoe factory in Norwich had been Van-Dal - it closed in August 2018.
