Rushmere is one of nine lakes on Wimbledon Common and is the oldest, probably dating back to medieval times. At one time rushes growing round the water were used for thatching.

Wimbledon Common is a large open space in Wimbledon, totalling 460 hectares. There are three named areas: Wimbledon Common, Putney Heath, and Putney Lower Common Putney Lower Common is separated from the rest of the Common by about 2.4 km. Most of the common is a SSSI.
