PME or Protective Multiple Earthing earthing is the dominant type of supply for homes built from the late 1950s onward. It is similar to TN-C-S earthing, in that the Neutral wire is the sole connection from the substation to the consumer for both Neutral and Earth potential, but with the added feature that the PEN (Protective Earth/Neutral) cable is periodically connected to earth spikes along the route. Typically every km or so, and at the consumer unit in every home.
