Entrance to Tramway tunnel, Pontypool
Entrance to Tramway tunnel, Pontypool
The tunnel, now unused and blocked, was constructed in 1825 to connect the Pontymoile tinworks, to the south west, to local forges. In World War II the tunnel was used as an air raid shelter. The tunnel is near the end of the Tramway Trail footpath. I was surprised to find the gates open to this disused tunnel SO2800 : Interior of Tramway tunnel, Pontypool.
