The ‘trees of Hope’ trail was one of the events organised to mark the first anniversary of the terrorist bomb attack on the Manchester Arena which killed 22 concert-goers as they left a concert by American singer, Ariana Grande on 22 May 2017.
The trail features 28 Japanese maple trees placed in planters, each sporting the bee logo, along a route from Victoria Station to St Ann’s Square. From Saturday 19 May to Sunday 27 May inclusive, anyone wishing to leave a message of tribute, solidarity and love was able to attach it to one of the trees using specially-designed cardboard tags. At the end of the Trees of Hope event, all of the messages will be preserved and kept – alongside tributes left last year – in an archive of the city’s response to the attack. It is intended that the trees themselves will remain in the city centre.
