17 Bishopgate/Tabernacle Road - Adam and Eve
According to Historical England, the former use of this 17th century (with 20th century alterations) Grade 2 listed brick and flint building is unknown. It is documented to have been leased in 1867 from the Great Hospital Charity by Youngs, Crawshay & Youngs, and the first licensee is recorded as having been John Thorpe, a barber, from 1760 to 1764. According to the information published on the Norfolk Public Houses website → LinkExternal link the building dates back to 1249 > Link - Link when it is said to have been built by monks for the purpose of brewing beer. In 1806 it was one of 36 Norwich houses opened for the reception of Voters in the interest of Mr Windham and Mr Coke on election day Thursday 13 November. In the 1860s, landlady Elizabeth Howes is reputed to have been responsible for smuggling contraband liquor from Great Yarmouth, hidden in shipments of sand and in early 1900 the landlords John and Sophia Andrews were repeatedly convicted of allowing consumption out of hours. At this time the pub was frequented by employees from the adjacent timber yard and nearby gas works. In 1937 it was registered as a beerhouse and in 1971 it was the last pub in Norwich selling “beer from the wood”. The first bar was installed in the cellar of the house in 1973.
