Seaton Tramway

The tramway arose, phoenix-like, at the and of the 1960s from the ashes of the old Seaton Junction to Seaton branch-line railway which first opened in 1868 as the Seaton & Beer Railway Company, later part of the London & South Western Railway and from 1923 part of the Southern Railway until nationalisation in 1948 when it became the Southern Region of British Railways. The line closed in 1966 as part of the ‘Beeching cuts’ initiated by the ‘Reshaping of British Railways’ report which caused the closure of many branch lines and stations up and down the country.

The tramway follows the route of the old railway but from Colyton to Seaton, the section from Seaton Junction to Colyton not being included in the sale of the line by British Railways to the tramway owners.

The tramway has continued to flourish since its inception and now carries over 100,000 visitors a year. For a more detailed history see the tramway’s website LinkExternal link
