The Bishop's Palace - north elevation
This Grade 1 listed flint building with brick and stone dressings is adjacent to the cathedral in the north and dates from the 11th century. It was restored and completely refaced in 1858-9 by Ewan Christian.

During WW2 the building was used by the US Army for the rehabilitation of USAAF pilots and from 1943-46 was an American Red Cross Service Club providing refreshments, accommodation and recreational activities to servicemen. The building was first leased to the Norwich School in 1958 to accommodate boarders and in 1988 converted to classrooms.

The list of WW1 Red Cross VAD Hospitals includes one at 'the Palace' in Norwich, without giving any further information. Thanks to a document held at the Norfolk Record Office/Archive Centre I have now been able to confirm that said hospital was housed in the Bishop's Palace. The document and photographs record a visit of Queen Alexandra to Norwich, where on 12 October 1918 she unveiled a memorial to Nurse Cavell > LinkExternal link , opened a Nurse Cavell Memorial Home for the District Nurses, and visited the Bishop's Palace Red Cross Hospital.
