The Dubh Sgeir south of Erraid
I find myself visiting a lot of "black skerry" locations in my search for unclaimed squares - this is the second such this week. This one is bigger than the one SW of Iona and was getting quite a bit more swell on the day we passed, hence a bit more distance was kept. Like all the many skerries in this area, this one is made of Ross of Mull granite, emplaced approximately 440 million years ago during the Caledonian orogeny. It's a pleasant orange-pink rock, not black at all, but no doubt seen looking south from the bigger landmass, it would appear in silhouette, and thus seem black.
