Town Hall Yard, Ashbourne, Derbys.
A view of the entrance to Town Hall Yard, in which the Tourist Information Office is located. The oval wall plaque on the left marks the fact that the Market Square - almost immediately behind the photographer - was the spot where Bonnie Prince Charlie proclaimed (in December 1749) that his father, James, was the rightful King of England, Wales and Scotland, whilst leading his army northwards. Charles Edward Stuart, a.k.a. the Young Pretender, instigated the unsuccessful Jacobite uprising of 1745 in an attempt to restore his family to the throne of Great Britain. This ended in defeat at the Battle of Culloden. The brass wall plaque above the passageway identifies the spot where a man was fatally injured - much later on - as the result of being hit by a falling sign that had previously hung above him.
