Gupshill Manor - Pub & Restaurant
Gupshill Manor is a pub and restaurant on Gloucester Road, Tewkesbury just north of its junction with the A38.
It is very close to the site of the Battle of Tewkesbury (4th May 1471) and it is reputed that Queen Margaret slept here on the eve of the battle. Margaret of Anjou was the redoubtable wife of Henry VI and effectively ruled the country for much of the time due to his enfeebled mental condition. The Battle of Tewkesbury however marked the nadir of her life. Her Lancastrian forces (which she had led into battle herself) were defeated by the Yorkists commanded by Edward IV and his brother Richard, Duke of Gloucester (later Richard III). Her son, Prince Edward, Prince of Wales, who was the heir to the Lancastrian dynasty was either killed in the battle or executed soon after. Margaret was captured and imprisoned as was her husband Henry VI, who died soon later - almost certainly dispatched on the orders of the victorious Edward IV.
If Margaret did indeed stay here, then it is obvious that it existed in the C15th (reputedly from 1438) although most of the original parts of the building now date from the C16th and C17th with a major restoration in 1707. It has also been extended greatly to the rear.
Now a pub and restaurant, which though prominently displaying Greene King signs, is I think an independent establishment. We had a good value meal there, although I believe that they could make a lot more of the history of this fine old building, especially in the decor and fittings, at least in the older part of the building.
