Shooting butt no. 5, Scarset Rigg
Being the 14th August, the moor was noticeably deficient in grouse, but extremely well supplied with spent cartridges, dog poo, and cigarette ends. Ah, the country life, noble stewards of our wilder bits of land take such great care of the place. Oh, tyre tracks, too, forgot to mention them. This is just one of a line of neatly built gun emplacements for the artillery to operate in some level of comfort - no crawling along in the wet peat like the stalkers do in Scotland. No mammals to hunt here - the gamekeepers make sure to trap anything resembling a four-legged predator (although I've seen more dead grouse in such traps than anything else).
