View towards St Mary's Church
The original parish church in Arkengarthdale was a further half mile down valley at Arkle Town but was abandoned when it faced sliding down the hill into Arkle Beck. St Mary's dates from 1818/19 and is sometimes referred to as a 'Waterloo church', extra funding apparently being available after the victory over Napoleon.
A large church for a small community, but at the time of its building this would have been a busy area.
