INEOS Runcorn
Part of a large chemical works employing 1600 people. The structure at the base of the chimney looks like a water tube boiler. Steam is an essential item in chemical works for power generation, heat carriage and as a component in some reactions - such as reforming.
I have now received some further information via e-mail as follows: - This is the old Weaver combined heat & power station that used to supply ~50MW of electricity to the chlor-alkali works plus also process steam (15 bar, from recollection although could have also supplied 40 bar). I think it was commissioned sometime in the 1970s.
