To accommodate the growing volume of traffic, construction of the current bridge began in 1927 and it was opened on 31st October 1929. The bridge carries the A183 and is the final crossing of the River Wear before it enters the North Sea. It is a Grade II Listed Building. LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) .
