taken 6 years ago, near to Renton, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland

A click beetle
A click beetle
The fern on which this beetle was photographed was beside the path shown in the left foreground of NS3977 : Footbridge on Cycle Route. The path leads under NS3977 : The Blue Bridge.

Click beetles (there are many species of them) are so called because they can launch themselves into the air with a click or a snap. Their larval forms, sometimes called wireworms, can be an agricultural pest.
