Paddling past Gordi Stack and Hevda
Paddling past Gordi Stack and Hevda
The amount (and unpredictability) of swell kept us on the outside of Hevda, the rocky foreground skerry, as we paddled round the southern extremity of the Ness of Hillswick, passing the impressive Gordi Stack. We'd already waited several days for the opportunity of doing this trip - the swell was bigger and accompanied by a gusty force six plus wind when we'd walked the coast a week earlier. It's a fine bit of coast, but offers no landings until well round Baa Taing and past the lighthouse, even in calm conditions. The geology of these cliffs is very complex, being part of the Virdibreck Shear Zone, with Semipelites and interbedded Calcsilicate rocks of the Queyfirth Group (Neoproterozoic in age and perhaps correlated with the Dalradian of mainland Scotland) cut about by faults and thrusts. The deck of a sea kayak is not the ideal place to study the geological map (BGS 1:50000 Scottish sheet 129, Northmaven) and the cliffs are hard to see from above, so T Robinson, whose unpublished PhD thesis with the University of Liverpool is the source of the mapping for this bit of Shetland must have had quite a job back in 1983...
