View towards Stud Gill
A small valley which runs parallel to the scarp slopes of the nearby Pennines. The valley may well run along the line of a major fault, but it will have been reformed and deepened at the end of the last ice age by meltwaters running around the edge of the Vale of Eden glacier. To the left is a steep slope with scree. One of the 19thC Ordnance Survey 6 inch maps does show a quarry here, but it must have been relatively small and short lived. Much of the exposed material is likely to be volcanic tuff of Ordovician age, considerably older than the Carboniferous rocks of the adjoining Pennine scarp.
