Goathland Railway Station
Goathland Railway Station
Initially for horse drawn trains, George Stephenson opened the Whitby to Pickering line in 1836 with Goathland Station at the top of a rope worked incline. York and North Midland later North Eastern Railway acquired the line in 1845. The line was upgraded in 1861 and the new Goathland Station then called Goathland Mill was opened in 1865. The gents toilet, wooden waiting room and ladies room were later additions. The Grosmont to Pickering line was closed in 1965 along with the station but three years later it became the headquarters of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and opened again for passengers in 1973. Goathland is probably most famous for ITV's Heartbeat but among its many other guises, it was Hogsmeade in the Harry Potter films and part of Simply Red's 1985 video for Holding Back the Years. Many station buildings are Grade II Listed including Main Station Building, Lime and Coal Cells, Goods Shed, Workshop and Water Tank, Footbridge and Water Column.
