D1451 : Rathlin Island, kelp plant

taken 6 years ago, 11 km NNE of Ballycastle, Co Antrim, Northern Ireland

Rathlin Island, kelp plant
Rathlin Island, kelp plant
A fascinating project in an outbuilding behind D1451 : Rathlin Island, Manor House. Kelp is gathered, distressed by drying, rehydrated to allow spores to be liberated; these then attach themselves to cords, which are planted on ropes in the bay. When mature, the fronts are gathered and processed into human foodstuff: LinkExternal link
