Nag is another name for a horse, often one that is old or in poor health. Originally it meant a horse that was suitable for riding rather than as a draught animal. The word seems to date from Middle English used in much of the Middle Ages. The sign here has the shape of the animal's head cut out so as it was photographed against a blue sky it has resulted in a blue nag!
