Dacre's Cross
Dacre's Cross
Wars of the Roses - Battle of Towton, Palm Sunday, 29th March 1461

Ancient cross, almost smothered by a holly bush beside the B1217. It commemorates Britain's bloodiest battle with an estimated 28,000 dead (roughly 3% of the realm's population slaughtered in a day)
The Yorkist victory cemented Edward IV's claim to the throne, and led to 10 years of relative peace.
