Field of Barley - The Yorkist Lines
War of the Roses - Battle of Towton, Palm Sunday, 29th March 1461

The Yorksist lines were strung across here in the initial stages of the battle. With a strong wind in their favour, the archers hit the mark while the Lancastrian arrows fell short. This drew the larger Lancastrian army out, and into hand to hand combat, which lasted several hours. As the Yorkists began to falter they were finally joined by Norfolk with fresh reinforcements. This proved decisive, causing the Lancastrians to flee the battlefield only to be cornered and slaughtered in Bloody Meadow.
It is estimated 28,000 died, in Britain's bloodiest battle - 3% of the realms population in one day.
The bodies of the fallen were exumed in 1483 and reburied in consecrated ground on the orders of Richard III

Battle of Towton

The Battle of Towton took place on the 29th March 1461 during the civil conflict known nowadays as the War of the Roses.
It has the grim distinction of being probably the largest and bloodiest battle ever fought on British soil.
It continued for 10 hours between an estimated 50,000 soldiers in a snowstorm on Palm Sunday.
3% to 4% of the English population perished in one day.
A decisive victory for the House of York confirmed Edward IV as King of England having recently replaced the hapless Lancastrian Henry VI
