Hadrian's Wall near Busy Gap
King's Wicket is the name of the wicket gate in the line of Hadrian's Wall in Busy Gap NY7969 : King's Wicket: gate through Hadrian's Wall. On the north side of the Wall here is a large triangular earthwork formed by an earthen bank with a superficial ditch, partly based on the Wall ditch, with a possible entrance lies at the north-west corner NY7969 : Enclosure, King's Wicket. The feature is thought to be a stock enclosure associated with a traditional drove road running through the Wall at this point. The date is uncertain, but in the late Middle Ages Busy Gap was a notorious haunt for bandits and raiders, known as 'Busy Gap rogues', and the stock held in the enclosure may not always have been there with the owner's consent.
