Milecastle 35, Hadrian's Wall
Milecastle 35, Hadrian's Wall
The remains of Milecastle 35 are located on the south facing slope of Sewingshields Crags and survive as stone foundations. Because of its lcoation, above sheer crags, this long-axis Milecastle is unusual as not needing a northern gate through the curtain wall. The Milecastle measures 18.3 metres by 15.2 metres internally and its walls are up to 3.2 metres wide NY8070 : Foundations of east wall, Milecastle 35. It was excavated in 1978-82, the interior occupied by Roman buildings of several phases and later re-used for a medieval farmstead.
