The cairn, in a small seafront garden on Bay Street, commemorates three generations of William Fifes who built world renowned racing yachts at this place from the early 19th Century until 1939. Several Americas Cup contenders were built here.

The plaque reads as follows...

"William Fife III (Jr) 1857-1944

The last Fife was one of the greatest yacht designers of his time
firmly establishing a reputation on both sides of the Atlantic.

He designed two Americas Cup challengers for
Sir Thomas Lipton, 'Shamrock I' and 'Shamrock III'.
'Latifa' was one of his favourite yachts and is commemorated
by the weather vane of Fairlie Church spire."

He had no heirs, and Fife yacht building
ceased at the onset of World War II".
