Wilfred Owen Memorial
Wilfred Owen Memorial
Wilfred Owen is perhaps the best known of the First World War poets and was born at Plas Wilmot near Oswestry. His family later moved to Birkenhead - where his father worked for the Great Western Railway, becoming stationmaster at Woodside station - and subsequently to Shrewsbury. He was a second lieutenant throughout the war, and was awarded the military cross in October 1918; shortly afterwards he was killed in action, just one week before the armistice. He is commemorated here close to St Oswald's Church.
