SJ9916 : Upper Sherbrook Pool

taken 6 years ago, 3 km from Brocton, Staffordshire, England

Upper Sherbrook Pool
Upper Sherbrook Pool
The pool appears to date from the Great War period and was used to provide a temporary water supply to Brocton Camp. This supply was found to be inadequate and three boreholes were sunk with an elevated 30000 gallon water tank where the Glacial Boulder now stands.

The heathland of Cannock Chase was used as a training area for troops in two large camps.

How many boots crossed this bridge en route to train in the practice trenches on the heathland opposite or to the rifle ranges? Half a million soldiers passed though the two camps.

An alternative theory is that this may have supported a water pipe laid between the two camps but this needs some more research.
