'Niagara' is tacking in close to the Kentish shore, while 'Adieu' heads directly upstream.

Conditions at the time were almost windless, with the temperature at about 28C. Less than half an hour later a fresh breeze blew up, so that four barges sped round the last bend to the finish at Gravesend. The rest - 'Lady of the Lea', 'Ironsides' and 'Repertor' - had by then given up and started their engines.
