A nearby information board states that the dam is 36 metres (120 feet) high and 156 metres (513 feet) long. Its construction using 61,000 cubic metres of stone was completed in 1904. The reservoir behind the dam has an area of 80 hectares (217 acres) when full and holds 9,220 megalitres (2 billion (2,000 million) gallons) of water. The hydroelectric turbine at the base of the dam generates 480 kilowatts of electricity for the National Grid.
Elan Valley Reservoirs :: SN9264
The dams and reservoirs of the Elan Estate are situated within an area of outstanding scenic beauty. They provide a lasting amenity in their own right for visitors to enjoy.

The protection of the water catchment to prevent pollution of the reservoirs has safeguarded the habitats of numerous species of flora and fauna.

However, it should be remembered that the dams were built to provide for a very basic need....water for the people of Birmingham.
