NZ0643 : Fence along plantation on Drypry Hill

taken 6 years ago, 3 km from Waskerley, County Durham, England

Fence along plantation on Drypry Hill
Fence along plantation on Drypry Hill
Drypry Hill is of a modest height and rises above the valley of the Waskerley Beck; it's covered with a coniferous plantation much of which has been clear-felled. The swan-necked posts must once have supported a significant fence, surely much more than would be needed to defend a crop of trees. Nearby however is another plantation, Saltersgate Plantation, which is fenced in a similar way. Saltersgate Plantation, or at least the land there was once the location of a Ministry of Supply ammunition dump which explains the defensive fencing there. Quite possibly Drypry Hill had a similar installation.
