War Memorials at The Printworks
War Memorials at The Printworks
The building known as “The Printworks”, located on Withy Grove at its corner with Corporation Street, is now an entertainment venue housing a range of restaurants, bars and clubs alongside a cinema and gym but it was once the largest newspaper printing house in Europe. Erected as Withy Grove Printing House in 1873, it ran successfully as a newspaper printers for over 100 years producing publications such as the Manchester Evening Chronicle and the Daily Mirror until it was closed in 1985. These two matching war memorial plaques inside the building provide clues to two of the owners of the building.

The First World War plaque, on the left, refers to the “Men of the London and Manchester staffs of E Hulton & Co Ltd”. Edward Hulton, established the works in 1873 and his son Sir Edward Hulton expanded his father's newspaper interests until he retired in 1923. The Second World War plaque, on the right, refers to “the members of the staff of Kemsley Newspapers Ltd”. The business had been sold to the Allied Newspapers consortium formed in 1924 and this was renamed Kemsley Newspapers in 1943. The Kemsley Group owned the business until it was sold to the Thompson Group in 1959.
