Grand Union Canal west of Welford in Northamptonshire
This is the Leicester Section of the Grand Union Canal, looking north-west towards Downtown Bridge, No 36.

The canal has been widened here to provide a winding hole so that boats up to seventy feet in length can turn round.
Winding Hole

A wind-ing hole (pronounced as in wind = breeze, not as wine-ding) is a wide section of the canal where narrowboats up to 70 feet (21.3 metres) in length, the maximum accommodated by most locks on the canal system, can be turned round.
