Hexham Abbey (Priory Church of St Andrews)
Originally founded by St Wilfrid c.673, Hexham Abbey is a former Augustinian Priory. It was rebuilt as a priory church 500 years later for canons sent by the Archbishop of York. The priory was closed down in 1537 during Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries, but the church continued as Hexham's Parish Church. There has been much recent restoration. Hexham Abbey is a Grade I listed building.
