Highgate West Cemetery opened in 1839 and the East Cemetery in 1860. This followed new legislation in the 1850s banning burials in central London. It was laid out to maximise the space available for burial and so does not feature the dramatic layout or imposing buildings of the West Cemetery - see
Link The old West Cemetery is closed to casual visitors but can be visited by guided tours. This is the East Cemetery which is open on payment of an entrance fee.
This is the grave of Mary Ann Evans (1819-1880), better known as George Eliot. She used a male pen name (like the Bronte sisters) to ensure that her books were taken seriously. The pedestal bears both her names - see
