Knipton Reservoir is owned and managed by the Belvoir Estate. It sits in a narrow landscaped valley and is stocked with carp among other species. Although there is no public access, there is a private members fishing club with its own club house and car park. In 2017 the reservoir was newly included in the boundary and description of Belvoir Castle on Historic England’s Register of Parks and Gardens. It is also part of the Leicestershire County Council’s Historic Environment Record of archaeological remains and historic buildings because of its industrial importance as being a major feeder reservoir for the Grantham Canal. As such it is an early example of integration of large-scale engineering infrastructure into an aesthetic landscape setting aiming to enhance rather than diminish its environs. It also feeds the lakes at Belvoir Castle.
