National Trust Notice at Pulpit Wood
This notice is located by Longdown Hill at the East end of Pulpit Wood. It says the following:
Pulpit Wood
Woodland management works
What are we doing?
Over the next ten years, we will undertake essential thinning works throughout the woodland. The tree removal will be phased to minimise any impact on the woodland structure and habitat.
Why are we doing this work?
The initial programme of works will be to thin the dense conifer blocks at Pulpit. The trees were planted in the 1950s and require gradual removal to improve light conditions to the woodland floor. This will enhance the habitat quality and also encourage new generations of trees to grow, particularly broadleaves such as oak and beech. We will also create new rides and glades within the woodland which will become havens for wildlife.
The three images show from left to right, Enhancing light conditions, Improving habitat quality and Restoring broadleaves.
Our long term aim will be to create a woodland which is rich in biodiversity, incorporating a variety of tree and shrub species of different ages, heights and densities. This in turn will provide a home for a greater variety of birds and bats. Butterflies and invertebrates will colonise the area as flowers spread across the woodland floor.
When are we undertaking works?
Tree thinning works will start in 2018 and continue for the next few years. We will create an extraction route off the main service road and a stacking area for the timber. Forestry machinery will be operating within designated areas of the woodland and safety notices will be posted advising visitors of such operations when they occur.
