The A417 road, which has come from Faringdon in Oxfordshire, uses St. John's Bridge to cross the River Thames. It then heads for the town centre and on to Fairford and Cirencester. A wooden bridge which used to be here long ago was replaced by a stone bridge in the 1220's. Over the years this was repaired when necessary, but a major rebuilding was undertaking by Peter Cox in 1831. The medieval arches were taken down. It is thought that some parts of the original may have been incorporated but if so they are not obviously visible. Further alterations were made in 1884. The structure is Grade II listed.

It should perhaps be said that this is quite a dangerous bridge to cross on foot. It is narrow, there are no pavements, visibility is poor and some vehicles are driven faster than is sensible. Always face oncoming traffic!
