Loading the Holland ferry, Harwich
Stena operate a pair of ferries out of Harwich, the Stena Hollandica (shown here) and the Stena Britannica, which each run once a day to Hoek van Holland and back, each crossing taking about seven hours. The ferries take foot passengers, cyclists, motorists and lorries. Here, the loading process of the topmost freight deck can be seen from the open passenger deck 9. While whole articulated lorries are transported as well, the majority of vehicles are trailers only which are manoeuvred skilfully at breakneck speed by towing units such as the one shown at the front. They are able to move a trailer almost at right angles to line them up very close together in the lanes painted on the deck.

The ferries are twelve stories tall, with decks 1 and 2 housing equipment and storage, while decks 3 and 4 carry cars and decks 5-8 lorries and trailers. Deck 9 is the main passenger area with restaurants, bars and lounges, while cabins for passengers are on decks 10 and 11. Deck 12 is reserved for the crew, and a helipad for emergencies is located at the top. The ferries, which were built by Wadan Yards in Rostock-Warnemünde LinkExternal link in 2010, are 240m long, 32m wide and 51m tall and have a draught of 6.65m. They can travel at 22kn (41km/h) and have a crew of 85.

Beyond the freight deck can be seen the oil drilling rig, Paragon C20051 LinkExternal link , which is currently laid up at Harwich.
