Llainfadyn Cottage, St Fagans Museum, Cardiff
This cottage was built in Snowdonia 1762. It is constructed of mountain boulders and two stout oak trusses support the roof of small, locally-quarried slates. In contrast to farmhouses, cottages like these were the homes of people who did not own enough land of their own to live off. They were usually farm labourers, craftsmen or, as in this case, a slate quarryman. In 1861 the inhabitants of this cottage were “Hugh and Ann Williams, six children, a maid and a lodger”. However, in 1901, following a fall in the demand for slate Owen and Ann emigrated to the USA. Amusingly however, the story is told that some years ago a 92 year old grandson of Owen and Ann’s returned from America to revisit this cottage - albeit that it was no longer situated in North Wales. It was dismantled & rebuilt at St Fagans in 1956.
