Forecourt, St Fagans Museum, Cardiff
The forecourt is seen here courtesy of an archway in a medieval wall. A Grade II-listed circular lead cistern can be seen ahead that bears the date 1620 and the arms of Sir Edward Lewis. It is thought to have been brought from Castell y Fan (a.k.a. Van Castle), Caerphilly. Van Castle was abandoned in the mid-18th century when the Lewis family moved to St Fagans Castle. Behind the photographer is a 250 driveway leading to this hall’s main entrance gates. The B4488 road to Cardiff lies beyond these, although they are normally secured and inaccessible to visitors.
